Trump Claims Iran Requested Talks to Avoid Major US Strike
US President Donald Trump has claimed that Iran asked for negotiations after the United States had completed preparations for a major military strike.
Speaking at an event in Las Vegas, Nevada, Trump said the US was preparing for its biggest military operation since World War II when Iranian officials contacted him. According to Trump, they urged the US not to carry out the attack and instead requested talks.
Trump said he prefers a diplomatic solution over further military action but stressed that the US position has not changed. He said he wants to reach an agreement because he does not want people to be killed, but insisted that Iran must never be allowed to possess nuclear weapons.
His remarks come as the Trump administration and Iran continue negotiations over the full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for maritime traffic.
