Trump Claims Iran Has No Navy or Air Force, Says IRGC Is ‘Decimated’

President Trump declared Wednesday that Iran has no navy, no air force and a collapsing Revolutionary Guard, closing his Truth Social post with “Praise be to Allah!” and a declaration that Iran is “the Bully of the Middle East No Longer.”

Trump repeated his claim that the US holds “total control” of the Strait of Hormuz, describing the American naval blockade as something “everyone” now calls “a wall of steel” that Iran is powerless against. He said Iranian troops are going unpaid, the IRGC is “decimated and fleeing,” Tehran’s leadership is uncertain, and the country has no money left — pairing the military claims with an economic one, citing 300% inflation he said is “getting worse.” He capped the post by calling Iran “all talk and no action.”

The trouble with taking this at face value is that Trump has said almost exactly this before, more than once, and each time subsequent events complicated the claim. In June, he wrote that Iran’s navy and air force “doesn’t even exist anymore” and that the country had been “completely defeated” — a declaration made before Iranian strikes on US forces in Jordan injured dozens of American service members, details the Pentagon initially declined to disclose. Journalists covering the war have specifically tracked this pattern of premature victory claims running up against continued Iranian operations on the ground.

Iran’s own officials, for their part, have spent this same week making claims that flatly contradict Trump’s. IRGC spokesman Hossein Mohebbi said Monday that the US has zero warships anywhere in the Persian Gulf — the opposite of Trump’s “total control” framing — while military adviser Mohammad Reza Naghdi claimed all 14 US-Israeli objectives during the recent war “completely failed” and announced Iran is shifting to a more offensive military doctrine, not a defensive collapse. Neither side’s claims have been independently verified, which is itself the more accurate story: both governments have clear incentives to declare victory publicly regardless of the actual state of Iran’s forces.

What’s harder to dispute is the inflation figure. Iran’s currency has been under sustained pressure through the war and the sanctions regime layered on top of it, and triple-digit inflation estimates have circulated in independent economic tracking for months — the one claim in Trump’s post with support beyond his own assertion.

The practical stakes of this rhetorical battle are limited. Public claims from both capitals shape media narratives and domestic morale far more than they change facts on the water or in Iranian barracks. Whether Trump’s latest declaration holds up better than his June one will likely be tested the same way the last one was — by whatever Iran does next, not by what either side says about it beforehand.
