Pakistan Summons US Envoy Over Ambassador’s Kashmir Remarks

Pakistan has summoned the US chargé d’affaires in Islamabad to lodge a strong protest over remarks by US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor, who described Kashmir as an “important part of India” during a visit to Srinagar. Pakistan’s Foreign Ministry said the remarks were factually incorrect and strongly condemned the characterization of Jammu and Kashmir as part of India.

The ministry stressed that Jammu and Kashmir is an internationally recognized disputed territory whose final status remains to be determined in accordance with relevant UN Security Council resolutions and the aspirations of the Kashmiri people. It said Pakistan categorically rejected any statement that sought to alter the status of the disputed region.

Pakistan also told US chargé d’affaires Natalie Baker that Gor’s remarks were irresponsible and contradicted Washington’s long-standing and well-documented position on the Kashmir dispute. Islamabad said the statement was inconsistent with the international status of the issue and warranted a strong diplomatic protest.
