Iran Says Neighbouring States Seek New Security Deals

22 August, 2026 18:39

Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said Saturday that Tehran has received “numerous messages” from neighbouring countries about reshaping regional security arrangements and expanding economic cooperation.

Ghalibaf’s comments come as the United States continues its economic pressure campaign against Iran and warns countries that maintain economic ties with Tehran of possible consequences.

“We’ve received numerous messages from neighboring countries about shaping new security arrangements and economic cooperation in the region,” Ghalibaf wrote on X.

Several Gulf countries are US allies and host American military bases. The countries have been closely watching the ongoing tensions between Washington and Tehran and the wider regional impact of the conflict.

Ghalibaf blamed US policies for increasing security concerns among Washington’s regional allies. He said the United States had put the security of its allies at risk because of its support for Israel.

“The United States put the security of every single one of its allies at such risk … through bullying and pure disregard for their interests for the sake of Israel that they briefly saw their entire existence on the line,” Ghalibaf wrote.

He argued that regional countries should rely more on their own cooperation instead of depending on outside powers for security.

“A homegrown, independent order is what will actually deliver peace and security,” Ghalibaf wrote.

His remarks came after US President Donald Trump announced new economic measures against Iran, describing them as “the most crushing economic operation ever taken against any country.”

Trump has warned that countries providing support to Iran could face serious economic consequences.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has rejected the latest US pressure campaign, saying the new sanctions would fail just as previous rounds of US sanctions against Iran had failed.
