Canada Announces Retaliatory Tariffs on US Imports

23 August, 2026 10:26

Prime Minister of Canada Mark Carney has established new tariffs on US imports from September 8, reacting to President Donald Trump’s 50% duties on Canadian imports. The decision came lengthy trade talks between Canada and the US with both sides failing to reach an agreement.

Carney said Canada would put on tariffs on a sort of US products, containing steel, dairy goods, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. He said the processes were essential to keep Canadian workers, farmers, families and businesses from the impression of US tariffs.

Trump’s new duties shake products such as Canadian wine, furniture, dairy items, cement, clothing, fishing tools and hockey stuff. The tariffs counseled around $20 billion worth of Canadian exports to the United States and also apply to some goods that were heretofore protected under the US-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA).

Carney said Canada could not accept the terms offered by Washington during the final stages of negotiations. According to the Canadian prime minister, the US administration made last-minute demands that were unfair and economically harmful to Canada.

US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said no new talks with Canada were currently planned. He also warned that Washington would take further measures in response to Canada’s retaliation.

The most recent enlargements have improved concerns about a promising trade war between the two longtime allies. Canada depends heavily on the US market, with nearly 70% of its exports going to the United States.

Carney said the Canadian government would introduce support measures for industries affected by the new tariffs. Ontario Premier Doug Ford backed the decision, saying the US proposals would have harmed Canada’s auto, steel and manufacturing sectors.

The dispute has also raised questions about the future of the USMCA and the wider economic relationship between Canada and the United States.
