Iran-Linked Hackers Shut Down Small UK Power Plant for Four Days
A small power plant in the UK was shut down for four days following a cyber attack last month, according to reports. The attack was reportedly carried out by hackers linked to the Iranian regime. However, the UK government said the incident did not pose any threat to the country’s wider energy system.
For security reasons, the government and the National Cyber Security Centre have not revealed the name or exact location of the affected site. Officials said the attack targeted a small-scale power generator rather than a major power station or other essential energy facility. The UK energy department has grasped out to power companies, advising them to reinforce their defences against impending cyber-attacks.
The UK depend on some slighter gas-powered generators that can run electricity when claim increases or added power is required. Authorities are therefore treating the security of these facilities as an important issue. The government is also updating cyber security rules and preparing a new energy resilience strategy.
Iran has long been considered a capable cyber power, and Western security agencies have been monitoring the possibility of attacks linked to Tehran. Concerns have improved as of the constant struggle relating Iran, the United States and Israel. Despite those worries, officials say there has so far been limited cyber activity linked to the conflict. The most recent case has nevertheless emphasized the possible dangers fronting slighter energy abilities and the need for resilient cyber defences.
