Reparations Debate Reopens the Long History of Iran-US Conflict

The question of reparations has once again emerged as a contentious issue between Iran and the United States amid the ongoing war. Iran has argued that Washington should compensate it for the destruction caused by US and Israeli attacks since February 28, 2026. US President Donald Trump, however, has rejected that position and said that if Iran seeks compensation, the United States should also receive compensation for what he describes as decades of damage caused by Iranian actions, including the deaths and injuries of American personnel.

Trump has cited American troops killed in roadside bombings and other conflicts, as well as the families of those killed in the USS Cole attack, while also attributing broader losses to Iran and its former commander General Qassem Soleimani. His argument raises a broader question about how far back any accounting of damages should go. If both sides are to open the books and calculate the costs of conflict, the debate cannot easily be separated from the events that shaped the modern history of Iran-US relations.

One possible starting point is the 1953 coup against Iran’s democratically elected Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh, an operation organized by British intelligence with US involvement that removed his government and strengthened the rule of Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. For many Iranians, the episode represents a foundational grievance, marking the loss of political independence and contributing to decades of authoritarian rule. Any serious discussion of reparations, therefore, would have to confront not only recent military destruction and casualties but also the historical chain of intervention, conflict and consequences that has defined relations between Iran and the United States for more than seven decades.
