Trump Floats Bizarre Proposal to Rename Strait of Hormuz ‘Trump Strait’

WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has floated an unusual proposal to rename the strategically important Strait of Hormuz the “Trump Strait”, claiming that the waterway is now under American control.

In a post on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump suggested changing the name of the Strait of Hormuz, arguing that since the United States had taken control of the strategic passage, it should be named after him.

Trump also joked that calling it the “Trump Strait” would make the waterway even more “hot,” referring to its strategic importance and the ongoing tensions surrounding it.

Trump again claimed that the United States had gained control over the Strait of Hormuz, a position rejected by Iran as military tensions in the region continue.

The proposal is not the first time Trump has suggested changing the names of major geographical locations.

His administration previously pushed for the use of “Gulf of America” instead of the Gulf of Mexico in US government usage. Trump has also previously floated the idea of renaming Lake Ontario as “Lake America.”

His administration has likewise sought to prominently associate his name with Washington’s Kennedy Center.

Alongside his comments about the Strait of Hormuz, Trump also sought to reassure Israel amid the latest escalation with Iran.

In a telephone interview with a public broadcaster, Trump said Israelis should not be worried and that he would take responsibility for Israel’s security.

Trump said there was no reason for Israel to be concerned because he is the president of the United States and would ensure that Israel remained protected.

His remarks come amid renewed tensions involving the United States, Iran and Israel, with the Strait of Hormuz remaining a central point of confrontation.
