China Pushes for US-Iran Dialogue, Calls for Islamabad Framework Revival

BEIJING: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has arrived in China for diplomatic consultations and held a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi amid continuing tensions between Iran and the United States.

During the meeting, China urged both Washington and Tehran to avoid further escalation and return to negotiations to resolve outstanding issues through dialogue.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Beijing did not want tensions in the region to intensify or spread further toward Yemen and the Red Sea.

He called on the United States and Iran to engage in meaningful negotiations over unresolved issues and work toward restoring a diplomatic framework based on the understandings reached under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Wang said the ongoing confrontation between Washington and Tehran served the interests of neither side and urged both countries to seek a negotiated solution.

Araghchi’s visit comes as Iran continues diplomatic efforts with regional and international partners amid heightened tensions.

The Iranian foreign minister has been engaged in discussions with several countries as Tehran seeks to pursue its diplomatic position and address issues surrounding the conflict.

China has repeatedly called for dialogue and restraint, while maintaining that regional security should be addressed through political and diplomatic channels.

Wang Yi’s reference to the Islamabad MoU highlights Beijing’s support for reviving an existing diplomatic framework rather than allowing military confrontation to deepen.

China said the understandings reached under the framework could provide a basis for renewed negotiations between Iran and the United States.

The meeting between Araghchi and Wang Yi reflects continued diplomatic engagement at a time when regional tensions remain high and concerns are growing over the potential expansion of the conflict into other parts of the Middle East.
