Turkish President tells UNGA Kashmir dispute a burning issue and calls for resolving it through dialogue.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said this in a speech he made o Tuesday via video-link to the 193-member Assembly’s landmark 75th session.

Turkey told the UN General Assembly on Tuesday that the Kashmir dispute between India and Pakistan was a “burning issue”, and called for resolving it through dialogue.’

“The Kashmir conflict, which is also key to the stability and peace of South Asia, is still a burning issue,” Turkish

“Steps taken following the abolition of the special status of Jammu-Kashmir further complicated the problem,” he said, referring to the August 5, 2019, unilateral move by India to annex the disputed territory.

“We are in favour of solving this issue through dialogue, within the framework of the United Nations resolutions and especially in line with the expectations of the people of Kashmir,” the Turkish leader added.

On the other hand, Dr. Ghulam Nabi Fai, secretary-general of the Washington-based World Kashmir Awareness Forum welcomed Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s strong support to the cause of Kashmir.

In a statement, he called his speech true reflection of the aspirations of Kashmiri people.

“His (Erdogan’s) words today at the 75th session of the United Nations General Assembly have become source of inspiration and given hope to millions of hopeless people of the region.”

He also noted that President Erdogan’s call for a multilateral dialogue was consistent with the statement made the President of the United Nations General Assembly, Ambassador Volkan Bozkir, a veteran Turkish diplomat, who said that “Multilateralism is not an option, but a necessity.”
