Trump engaged in ‘criminal effort’ to overturn 2020 election: special counsel report

14 January, 2025 19:33

US Special Counsel Jack Smith has said that Donald Trump involved in an unprecedented criminal effort to hold on to power after losing the 2020 election, but was thwarted in bringing the case to trial by the president-elect’s November election victory.

The report published on Tuesday details Jack Smith’s decision to bring a four-count indictment against Donald Trump that accused him of plotting to hinder the collection and certification of votes after his 2020 defeat by Democratic President Joe Biden.

The report concluded that the evidence would have been sufficient to convict Donald Trump at trial. But his return to the presidency made that impossible.

The special counsel, who has faced criticism from Donald Trump, also defended his inquiry and the prosecutors who worked on it.

Smith wrote in a letter detailing his report that the claim from Trump that my decisions as a prosecutor were influenced or directed by the Biden administration or other political actors is, in a word, laughable.

Donald Trump, after the release, in a post on his Truth Social site, called Smith a “lamebrain prosecutor who was unable to get his case tried before the election.”
