16 March, 2025 12:00

The Trump administration has suspended journalists engaged with the US-funded broadcasters, including Voice of America and Radio Free Asia.

After the move, over 1,300 Voice of America employees were placed on leave.

The administration ordered the journalists and other media staff to leave their offices and surrender equipment. The move is being strongly criticised  inside and outside America.

Reporters and other staff at Radio Free Asia, VOA, Radio Free Europe and other media houses received a weekend email saying they will be barred from their offices. It advised them to surrender office-issued telephones, press passes and other equipment.

Harrison Fields, a White House press official, taking to X, formerly known as Twitter,  and wrote: “goodbye” in 20 languages, a jab at VOA’s multilingual coverage.

The Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty chief that launched broadcasting into the Soviet bloc during the Cold War, has termed the cancellation of funding as a massive gift to the enemies of US.
