China Concerned Over US Golden Dome Missile Plan

As the United States moves ahead with its ambitious “Golden Dome” missile defense project, China has voiced serious concerns, warning it could lead to the weaponization of space and spark a global arms race.

The Golden Dome—an advanced missile shield inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome—is being developed under former President Donald Trump’s direction. The system aims to provide layered defense by intercepting missiles at multiple stages: from pre-launch to mid-course, and just before impact.

Trump has claimed the system will be able to stop missile attacks from anywhere on Earth—“including space.”

“China has expressed grave concerns over the Golden Dome, particularly regarding the possible militarization of space,” according to the Beijing-based Global Times. Chinese officials argue that the system could “turn space into a war zone” and escalate military competition beyond Earth’s atmosphere.

The inclusion of space-based interceptors is at the heart of Beijing’s objections. Chinese authorities fear such capabilities could allow the United States to deploy weapons in orbit, potentially breaching international agreements. These include the Outer Space Treaty (OST), which prohibits the placement of weapons of mass destruction in space.

As the US advances this defense initiative, experts warn it could heighten tensions and undermine decades of global efforts to maintain space as a peaceful domain.
