Ghee and cooking oil prices increase in Pakistan

21 June, 2025 14:41

Ghee and cooking oil prices in Pakistan have gone up by Rs 10 to Rs 20 per kilogram, even before the new budget for the fiscal year 2025–26 has been officially implemented.

According to media reports, manufacturing companies themselves raised the prices without any official approval. The Pakistan Vanaspati Manufacturers Association (PVMA) General Secretary Farid Qureshi confirmed that some companies increased prices ahead of the federal budget’s passage.

Now, a 1 kg pouch of ghee or oil is being sold for Rs 560 to Rs 570, which was previously Rs 550.

There is no proper price control system in the country, which allows businesses to increase rates on their own, taking advantage of the situation.

This price hike comes shortly after the government raised petroleum prices due to new taxes introduced in the latest budget. These rising costs are putting extra pressure on household expenses, especially for everyday food items like ghee and cooking oil.
