Pakistan Urges Immediate Ceasefire in Middle East at UN Security Council
Pakistan called for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the Middle East, warning that the region could not withstand further escalation.
During an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council, Pakistan’s Permanent Representative, Asim Iftikhar, stressed that any increase in tensions would have consequences extending far beyond the region.
He strongly criticized the recent US airstrikes on Iranian facilities, describing them as dangerous actions that pose a direct threat to peace and stability. He noted that several member states had previously cautioned against such operations, which violate the UN Charter, yet international appeals for restraint and diplomacy were ignored.
Reaffirming Pakistan’s stance, Iftikhar said it is grounded in principles that align with the UN Charter. He reiterated Pakistan’s condemnation of Israeli military aggression and expressed steadfast support for Iran’s right to defend its sovereignty under international law.
The Pakistani envoy denounced Israel’s targeting of nuclear facilities monitored by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), calling such actions illegal and highly provocative. He urged the global community to take immediate steps to stop Israeli aggression and instead push for peaceful negotiations to address the Iranian nuclear issue.
Voicing deep concern over the worsening situation, Iftikhar warned that continued hostility and unlawful acts could destabilize the entire region and threaten global peace and security. He emphasized Pakistan’s full solidarity with Iran during this critical period.
Iftikhar also reminded UN member states of their legal duty to uphold Security Council resolutions and stressed that the Council bears the primary responsibility to act. “The use of force or threats to use force must not be normalized,” he stated. “The Security Council must act swiftly and decisively to prevent further deterioration.”
