Diogo Jota’s Final Phone Call Before Fatal Car Crash Leaves Football World in Mourning

04 July, 2025 13:44

Hours before his tragic death, Liverpool star Diogo Jota made a final phone call to Alvaro Cerqueira, president of his boyhood club, Gondomar SC. Cerqueira shared that Jota was in good spirits and enjoying a happy moment in life.

The 28-year-old Portuguese footballer and his younger brother Andre Silva, 26, both died in a car crash in Zamora, Spain, early Thursday morning.

Jota’s Journey Back to Liverpool

Jota and his brother were traveling by car to the Santander port to catch a ferry back to England. Due to recent lung surgery, doctors advised Jota not to fly.

At around 12:30am local time, the Lamborghini they were in reportedly suffered a tyre blowout while overtaking on the A-52 motorway. The vehicle veered off the road and caught fire. Both Jota and Andre died at the scene.

Final Phone Call to Gondomar President

Speaking to Jornal de Noticias, Alvaro Cerqueira said: “It was just after 10pm. We talked on the phone, and he sounded fine. He was happy.”

Jota had a close relationship with his former club. He began his football journey at Gondomar SC at just nine years old. Cerqueira added that Jota would often return to train at the club in the off-season.

“His brother would come too. They were both very humble. It’s hard to accept, but they leave behind a lasting memory.”

A Wedding Just Two Weeks Ago

Only two weeks before his death, Diogo Jota married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, in their hometown of Gondomar, near Porto. The couple shared three children together.

Their sudden passing has shocked the entire football world.

Funeral Details for Diogo and Andre

A wake will be held at Sao Cosme Chapel, followed by a funeral service at Igreja Matriz de Gondomar on Saturday at 10am.

Tributes Pour In from Around the World

Fans have gathered at Anfield, placing flowers, scarves, and jerseys in Jota’s memory.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk shared an emotional message: “Absolutely devastated and in total disbelief… What a player, what a family man. We will always be there for your family. Your legacy will live on.”
