Untrained Nurses Responsible for Deaths of 20 Newborns in Punjab Govt Hospital

04 July, 2025 16:49

The Punjab Health Department and Commissioner Sahiwal have issued a preliminary report regarding the tragic deaths of 20 newborns at the District Headquarters (DHQ) Hospital in Pakpattan.

According to initial findings, “15 of the 20 infants were delivered at private, unregistered maternity homes or by untrained midwives (nurses),” and were only brought to the DHQ Hospital when their condition had significantly worsened. The report links five of the deaths directly to the unsafe practices of untrained nurses.

Additionally, it was revealed that in many cases, mothers were not present when the babies were admitted, complicating emergency response efforts and documentation.

No Oxygen Shortage Found

Contrary to initial rumors, the report found no evidence of an oxygen shortage at the hospital. Officials confirmed that “45 oxygen cylinders were available and in working order” during the incidents.

A detailed clinical audit has been completed, reviewing patient arrival and treatment timelines. The results will be presented to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz during her upcoming visit to Pakpattan.

Action Taken Against Illegal Clinics

In response to the findings, authorities have sealed several illegal and unregistered maternity homes and closed the operation theaters of four private hospitals. These facilities lacked Punjab Healthcare Commission registration and qualified staff.

This crackdown was led by Dr. Ahmad Salman (Deputy Director Health), while Deputy Commissioner Maria Tariq confirmed the enforcement actions.

External Inquiry and Future Measures

An external investigation committee has been formed, including doctors and a biomedical engineer from Sahiwal Teaching Hospital. They are tasked with evaluating hospital procedures, staff availability, and emergency response systems. The report is expected within five days.

Although internal inquiries have cleared the pediatric team of direct negligence, issues like poor documentation remain a concern.

Meanwhile, families of the deceased and local voices are calling for “an independent probe and full transparency,” demanding accountability and urgent reforms in neonatal care.

The Health Department has pledged to implement technical reforms immediately once all deficiencies are confirmed. Several senior officials from DHQ Hospital Pakpattan have already been relieved of their duties pending further investigation.
