Saeed Ghani Pledges Strict Action Over Lyari Building Collapse; DG SBCA Suspended
KARACHI:Â Sindh Local Government Minister Saeed Ghani has announced strict action against those responsible for the recent building collapse in Lyari that claimed 27 lives.
Addressing a press conference alongside Sindh Information Minister Sharjeel Memon and Law Minister Zia ul Hassan Lanjar, Ghani stated that those found guilty will face the strictest punishment.
The provincial government has suspended the Director General of the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA), along with other officers posted in the area. Ghani confirmed that identification is underway of the officials who were in office when the building was originally declared dangerous in 2002.
Ghani added that work to demolish 51 dilapidated buildings across the city will begin soon. Commissioner Karachi has been directed to conduct a comprehensive survey of these structures. A report on other dangerous buildings is expected within the next 24 hours.
During the press conference, it was announced that the families of the deceased will receive financial assistance of Rs. 1 million each. The ministers assured that the provincial government shares the grief of the victims’ families.
Information Minister Sharjeel Memon noted that the relevant SBCA officer was suspended on the same day of the incident, followed by the suspension of the DG SBCA.
A committee has been formed to investigate the incident, and its report is expected within two days. Ghani emphasized that any government officer found negligent will face action. Furthermore, the government is reviewing the legal framework around illegal constructions, with a two-week deadline set for proposing amendments to SBCA laws.
