Mitchell Starc Creates History with Fastest Five-Wicket Haul in Test Cricket
Mitchell Starc broke a 78-year-old Test cricket record on Monday, July 14, 2025, during the third and final Test match between Australia and the West Indies at Sabina Park, Jamaica. The left-arm fast bowler took a five-wicket haul in just 15 balls — the fastest ever in the history of Test cricket.
Starc’s remarkable spell helped Australia defeat the West Indies by 176 runs. It was a match full of drama and intensity, but Starc’s performance stood above all.
A Record That Stood Since 1947
Before Starc, the record for the fastest five-wicket haul belonged to Ernie Toshack. He had achieved the feat in 19 balls against India in 1947. Stuart Broad and Scott Boland also share the previous record with Toshack. But now, Starc has set a new benchmark — claiming five wickets in only 2.3 overs.
Starc’s Magic with the Ball
The West Indies were chasing 204 runs under lights. Starc came in and destroyed their top order in no time. He picked up three wickets in his very first over. Then, he came back in the third over and dismissed Mikyle Louis and Shai Hope. With Hope’s wicket, Starc reached his 400th Test wicket. He now joins a list of elite Australian bowlers.
He ended his spell with jaw-dropping figures — 6 wickets for just 9 runs in 7.3 overs. Unsurprisingly, he was named both Player of the Match and Player of the Series.
Australia’s Batting Struggles
Earlier in the day, Australia were bowled out for 121 in their second innings. Cameron Green was the top scorer with 42 runs. Alzarri Joseph took 5 wickets for 27 runs, while Shamar Joseph grabbed 4 wickets. Even with a low total, Australia still had a strong 203-run lead.
West Indies Collapse Under Pressure
The West Indies batting collapsed badly. At tea on Day 3, they were 22 for 6. Starc and Scott Boland were unstoppable. Boland also contributed with a hat-trick in the 14th over. West Indies were eventually bowled out for just 26 runs, with Jayden Seales being the last man to fall — once again to Starc.
This total was close to breaking the record for the lowest team score in Test cricket history.
Starc’s Brilliance and West Indies’ Woes
Starc’s pace and accuracy were too much for the West Indies. His outstanding series performance proves once again that he is one of the best in the world. Australia’s pink-ball Test dominance continues.
On the other hand, West Indies have much to think about. Their bowlers did well in parts of the series, but their batting lineup failed to deliver. The team will need to work hard to bounce back from this heavy defeat.
