Veteran Actor-Director Dheeraj Kumar Passes Away at 79

Veteran actor, producer, and director Dheeraj Kumar passed away on Tuesday, July 15, 2025, at 11:40 am in Mumbai. He was 79 years old.

Kumar had been admitted to Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital in Andheri West. He was on ventilator support in the ICU after being diagnosed with acute pneumonia. According to hospital sources, he suffered a cardiac arrest, which led to his death. His son, Ashutosh Kumar, was present with him at the time.

His family said in a public statement: “It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Dheeraj Kumar, a renowned actor, producer, and director. He contributed significantly to the entertainment industry. Our prayers are with his family and friends.”

Who was Dheeraj Kumar?

Dheeraj Kumar was a prominent figure in Indian television and cinema. He began his career in the entertainment industry in 1965, as a finalist in a talent show with Rajesh Khanna and Subhash Ghai. Rajesh Khanna eventually won the contest.

Kumar acted in over 21 Punjabi films between 1970 and 1984. He also appeared in Hindi films like Heera Panna, Raaton Ka Raja, and Swami — where the famous song “Ka Karoon Sajani, Aaye Na Balam” was picturised on him.

Later in his career, he moved into production. He founded the well-known production company Creative Eye Ltd, where he served as Chairman and Managing Director. The company was behind many successful television serials.

Spiritual Beliefs and Public Life

Dheeraj Kumar was a strong believer in spirituality and Indian culture. He recently attended the inaugural ceremony of the ISKCON temple in Kharghar, Navi Mumbai. He praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for promoting Sanatan Dharma.

“While they called me the VVIP, I believe the true VVIP is God,” he said at the event.
