UN Peaceful Dispute Settlement
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has unanimously adopted a resolution sponsored by Pakistan, urging all nations to settle disputes through peaceful means such as negotiation, mediation, and arbitration.
Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar chaired the UNSC Open Debate on “Promoting International Peace and Security through Multilateralism and the Peaceful Settlement of Disputes.” This session marked the first major event under Pakistan’s presidency of the UNSC for July.
According to Pakistan’s Foreign Office (FO), the resolution titled “Strengthening Mechanisms for Peaceful Settlement of Disputes” highlights the importance of preventive diplomacy and using Chapter VI of the UN Charter, which promotes peaceful solutions.
The resolution encourages UN member states to:
Use peaceful methods to resolve conflicts
Prevent disputes from escalating through early diplomatic efforts
Strengthen cooperation with regional and subregional organizations
Implement Security Council resolutions effectively
The FO said this resolution is a major step forward in promoting global peace and security. It also reflects Pakistan’s commitment to peaceful conflict resolution as a member of the UN Security Council.
