5.5-magnitude eartquake felt in KP and Islamabad

02 August, 2025 10:38

An earthquake hit northern Pakistan early Saturday morning, causing panic in many areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other regions. Thankfully, there were no reports of damage or injuries.

The earthquake had a magnitude of 5.5 and came from the Hindu Kush region in Afghanistan, with a depth of 114 kilometers. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, it was recorded at 2:03 am.

People in Peshawar, Swat, Malakand, Mardan, Dir, Haripur, Abbottabad, and other nearby cities felt strong tremors. The quake was also felt in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Azad Kashmir, Charsadda, Karak, and parts of Gujranwala.

Along with the earthquake, heavy rain hit Islamabad and Murree during the night, with thunder and lightning adding to the disturbance.

The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said it is in contact with all district administrations in KP to stay updated. Citizens are advised to call the helpline 1700 if they need help during any emergency.

This is not the first earthquake in the region. Several quakes have hit northern Pakistan in recent months, most of them linked to the Hindu Kush region. In June, a 4.7-magnitude quake hit Peshawar. In May and April, stronger tremors were also reported in Islamabad, Swat, and other KP areas.

Experts say Pakistan is located on a fault line where the Indian and Eurasian tectonic plates meet, which is why earthquakes are common—especially in the northern parts of the country.

Interestingly, Karachi has also experienced unusual tremors this year, with over 30 mild quakes linked to the Landhi Fault Line.
