Trump slaps India with additional 25% tariff, increasing total levy to 50%

Trump announces extra 25% tariff on India over Russian oil purchase, total levy now at 50%
In a major trade move, U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a new 25% tariff on imports from India. The decision comes in response to India’s continued purchases of oil from Russia.
The announcement was made on Wednesday, through an executive order published by the White House. The timing of the order raised eyebrows, as it was issued shortly after Steve Witkoff, a senior U.S. envoy, met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow.
“I determine that it is necessary and appropriate to impose an additional ad valorem duty on imports of articles of India, which is directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil,” Trump stated in the order.
The new tariff reflects growing U.S. pressure on countries that continue to maintain trade ties with Russia amid ongoing global tensions.
India has been a key trading partner of the United States, but its oil deals with Russia have become a point of conflict. The 25% tariff is expected to affect Indian goods entering the U.S. market, adding to the cost of doing business for Indian exporters.
Analysts say this move could escalate into a broader U.S.-India trade dispute, especially if retaliatory measures follow from the Indian side.
