Dhurandhar Starring Ranveer Singh Faces Legal Trouble Ahead Of Its Release
Just days ahead of its theatrical release, Ranveer Singh’s action thriller Dhurandhar has become embroiled in a legal controversy—not due to box office competition, but over the legacy of a soldier who does not feature in the film.
The family of the late Major Mohit Sharma has petitioned the Delhi High Court, seeking an immediate stay on the film’s release. They allege that the movie appears to draw upon the officer’s life and clandestine missions without their consent.
The petition contends that even minimal fictionalization of Major Sharma’s story infringes upon his posthumous personality rights, as well as the family’s privacy.
Adding a layer of gravity to the dispute is the concern that the film could inadvertently encroach upon sensitive national security matters. The family warns that inclusion of any elements from Major Sharma’s classified operations could disclose details never intended for public knowledge.
The controversy gained momentum on social media, where speculation mounted that Dhurandhar was inspired by the decorated Para SF officer. Responding swiftly, director Aditya Dhar denied any connection, asserting on X that the film bears “no connection” to Major Sharma. He further assured that any future biopic would proceed only with explicit consent from both the family and the Indian Army.
The petition, however, extends beyond this case, urging the court to mandate that filmmakers must obtain permission from both families and the Army before depicting real-life martyrs on screen.
The Delhi High Court is slated to hear the matter next week. Meanwhile, the release of Dhurandhar, scheduled for 5 December, remains uncertain.
