Stanley Baxter Dies at 99

12 December, 2025 18:53

Stanley Baxter, a Scottish comedian and performer, passed away at the age of 99.

He was one of the biggest personalities on British television for many years, having been born in Glasgow in 1926.

Between the 1960s and the 1980s, Baxter starred in several popular television shows. He was also well-known for his acting roles and his frequent participation in pantomimes.

Baxter passed away on Thursday at Denville Hall, a care facility for celebrities in north London where he had been since late 2023, according to his friend and biographer Brian Beacom.

Baxter became well-known in variety theater after beginning his career in Scottish theaters in the 1940s.

As a result, he was cast in the comedy sketch show On The Bright Side, when he debuted Parliamo Glasgow, which went on to become one of his most well-known skits.

He delivered sentences with a thick Glasgow accent in this parody of a foreign language show, then “translated” them into the official pronunciation of British television at the time.

Before moving to London Weekend Television (LWT) in 1973 with The Stanley Baxter Picture Show, the Stanley Baxter Show debuted on the BBC in 1963 and quickly became a major smash.

He won multiple Baftas for playing the majority of the roles in the show’s parodies of television and movies.

The Stanley Baxter Series, which returned to the BBC later in the decade, came after this in 1981.

Before retiring from television in 1990, he also made an appearance on the children’s program Mr. Majeika. However, he continued to perform as a panto dame in Scotland for a number of additional years.

Later, he recorded several plays for BBC Radio 4 and made appearances in three half-hour radio sitcoms.
