United States Announces Phased Closure of Peshawar Consulate, Shifts Diplomatic Duties to Islamabad

The United States has announced the phased closure of its consulate in Peshawar, Pakistan, marking a significant adjustment in its diplomatic presence in the region.

According to a statement issued by the State Department, responsibility for diplomatic engagement with Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will now be transferred to the US Embassy in Islamabad.

The department stated that the decision reflects its ongoing commitment to ensuring the safety of diplomatic personnel and improving the efficient use of resources.

It further noted that the United States will continue to maintain meaningful engagement with the people and authorities of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Efforts to strengthen economic cooperation and regional security collaboration will also remain a priority.

A State Department spokesperson emphasized that the move underscores a focus on personnel safety and resource optimization. They added that US policy priorities in Pakistan remain unchanged despite the relocation of its physical diplomatic operations from Peshawar.

The statement also confirmed that US officials will continue working closely with authorities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to support American interests in the region.

Reaffirming long-term diplomatic engagement, the department highlighted that relations between the United States and Pakistan will continue through its missions in Islamabad, Karachi, and Lahore, ensuring continued cooperation and diplomatic outreach.
