Pakistan ready to host next phase of Iran–US talks, says PM Shehbaz Sharif

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Sunday said he hoped Pakistan would soon host the next round of Iran–US talks, as he praised US President Donald Trump for his efforts to promote peace and diplomacy in the region.

In a post on X, the prime minister congratulated Trump on what he called his “extraordinary efforts to pursue peace” and said the US president had held a “very useful and productive” phone call with several regional leaders, including those from Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Turkiye, Egypt, the UAE, Jordan, and Pakistan.

He added that Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff and Chief of Defence Forces, Field Marshal Asim Munir, represented the country during the call. Shehbaz Sharif said he appreciated Munir’s “tireless efforts” in supporting ongoing diplomatic engagement and mediation efforts.

“The discussions provided a useful opportunity to exchange views on the current regional situation and how to move the ongoing peace efforts forward to bring lasting peace in the region,” the prime minister said.

He further stated, “Pakistan will continue its peace efforts with utmost sincerity and we hope to host the next round of talks very soon.”

The comments came just after Donald Trump posted on Truth Social that he had held a “very good call” with leaders in the region over Iran and a potential agreement on peace. He stated that the talks also addressed a proposed MOU between the US, Iran, and multiple other countries.

Trump said the agreement was largely in place but pending final approval. He also remarked that “the Strait of Hormuz will be opened,” an important route often linked to regional tensions.

However, Iranian state-linked news agency Fars rejected this claim, saying any arrangement would allow Iran to maintain control over the strait and calling Trump’s statement “inconsistent with reality.”

US Minister said he also talked distinctly with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and said the discussion went well.

The recent diplomatic developments move come as Washington and its regional partners step up pressure for a broader deal with Tehran. Previously, Trump said hat talks were almost done, and cautioned of possible military action if they did not succeed.

In the meantime, Pakistan has stepped up its diplomatic efforts as a mediator between the US and Iran. Field Marshal Asim Munir recently arrived in Tehran, nd held meetings with top Iranian civilian and military officials.

According to ISPR, the negotiations were directed in a “positive and constructive environment” and maintained progression in the negotiation process.

During the visit, Munir met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, and Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni

Pakistan has played a mediation role since tensions escalated following earlier regional clashes earlier this year. It previously helped broker a short ceasefire between the United States and Iran and hosted direct talks in April.

Although earlier negotiations did not produce a final agreement, Pakistan continues to support backchannel diplomacy in an effort to reduce tensions and promote lasting peace in the region.
