Iranian President Pezeshkian to Visit Pakistan After Historic US-Iran Talks in Switzerland
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian is set to arrive in Pakistan on Tuesday following a landmark first round of negotiations between Tehran and Washington held in Switzerland — talks that were made possible through Islamabad’s crucial mediation role. The visit was confirmed by Iran’s state news agency, IRNA, citing a statement from the Iranian president’s office.
According to Habibollah Abbasi, Director of Public Relations at the president’s office, one of the primary objectives of Pezeshkian’s visit to Islamabad is to personally express gratitude to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif for his government’s active and effective mediation between Iran and the United States throughout this delicate diplomatic process.
US and Iran Agree to 60-Day Roadmap for Final Deal
The first round of US-Iran talks has concluded with what mediators described as “encouraging progress”, though some areas of tension — particularly around Lebanon and the Strait of Hormuz — remain unresolved. A joint statement issued by mediating nations Pakistan and Qatar, and released through the Qatari Foreign Ministry, confirmed that both Washington and Tehran have agreed to a roadmap towards a final deal within 60 days.
Technical-level negotiations are set to continue throughout the remainder of the week at the Qatari-owned Buergenstock mountain resort in Switzerland. The parties also reached an agreement on a mechanism to end the conflict in Lebanon between US ally Israel and Iran-aligned Hezbollah. Furthermore, both sides have established a dedicated communications line designed to safeguard the free passage of commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz — one of the world’s most strategically vital oil supply routes.
Vance Calls IAEA Agreement a ‘Major Milestone’
US Vice President JD Vance delivered some of the most significant news to emerge from the Switzerland talks, announcing that Iran has formally agreed to invite International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspectors back into the country — a development he described as a historic step forward.
Speaking to reporters at the Buergenstock resort following the opening round of negotiations, Vance stated:
“The Iranians have agreed to invite IAEA inspectors back into their country. That is a major milestone for the American people and the first step in permanently denuclearising or permanently ending a nuclear weapons program in Iran.”
Addressing the broader outcome of the talks, Vance added:
“We laid a very good foundation for a successful final deal. The final deal is the house. We set the foundation; we haven’t built the house, but we’ve laid a successful foundation to get to a good place for the American people.”
He acknowledged the scale of remaining challenges while reaffirming Washington’s commitment:
PM Shehbaz Calls Talks a Historic Diplomatic Achievement
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, writing on social media platform X, declared that the first round of talks had “concluded successfully”, adding:
“The discussions were held in a positive and constructive atmosphere and yielded encouraging progress.”
In a formal statement, the prime minister outlined key outcomes from the negotiations, including the agreement on a 60-day roadmap, the establishment of a High-Level Committee to provide political oversight, and the launch of further technical-level discussions. He reaffirmed that Pakistan will continue to play an honest and sincere role in promoting dialogue and diplomacy aimed at achieving a peaceful and lasting resolution to the conflict.
PM Shehbaz also offered commendations to the leadership of both the United States and Iran for their commitment to constructive engagement. He expressed special gratitude to Qatar for its critical role in enabling the negotiations and also thanked the Swiss government for hosting and facilitating the talks. The prime minister has since returned to Pakistan after concluding his visit to Switzerland, where he was seen off at Zurich Airport by senior Swiss officials and Pakistan’s Ambassador to Switzerland, Marghoob Saleem Butt.
