Lahore Receives Heavy Rainfall as Motorway Police Issue Travel Warning
On Sunday, the Pakistan Meteorological Department reported, heavy rain with strong winds hit several parts of Lahore, bringing much-needed relief from the heat. Some areas, including Nishtar Town, Johar Town, Gulberg, Lawrence Road, Mazang, Mall Road, Lakshmi Chowk, and Nabha Road, received rainfall, providing relief from the heat.
Farrukhabad received the highest rainfall at 18.2 mm, followed by Saggian (17.4 mm), Tajpura (14.6 mm), and Pani Wala Tala in the Walled City (12.4 mm) according to PDM reports.
As the rain hit the city, Lahore Commissioner Nauman Yousaf ordered teams from WASA, the Metropolitan Corporation Lahore (MCL), and the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) to remain on duty and speed up drainage operations across the city. He asked Assistant Commissioners to oversee drainage operations keep major roads and underpasses free of water, and ensure the Central Business District (CBD) and Ravi Urban Development Authority (RUDA) teams remain fully alert.
The commissioner further ordered that disposal stations affected by power outages should immediately switch to generators to keep pumping stations running without interruption. WASA Town Directors have also been tasked with closely monitoring the situation.
In the meantime, the Motorway Police said rain has also been reported on the M-2 Motorway between Kot Momin and Thokar Niaz Baig, whereas rainfall continues on the Lahore–Sialkot Motorway from the Main Toll Plaza to Sambrial. Cloudy conditions are also prevailing on the M-3 Motorway between Faizpur and Nankana.
Due to rain the roads become slippery, so the Motorway police warned drivers to drive carefully, are urged to maintain a safe speed and exercise extra caution on wet roads and stay away from unsafe overtaking, overspeeding, and sudden braking.
Drivers have also been urged to ensure their headlights and windscreen wipers are in good working condition, wear seat belts at all times, follow lane discipline, and contact the Motorway Police Helpline (130) in case of an emergency.
