Cnergyico Refinery’s Marine Fuel Powers Gwadar Port’s First International Ship Refuelling Operation

Islamabad: Pakistan’s maritime and energy sectors have achieved a landmark success as marine fuel produced by Cnergyico PK Limited’s refinery was used in the first-ever international ship bunkering operation at Gwadar Port. The milestone operation, carried out by the National Logistics Corporation (NLC) in collaboration with global energy company Vitol, marks a major step towards establishing Gwadar as a regional bunkering and maritime services hub while highlighting Pakistan’s growing capability to produce internationally compliant marine fuels.

The inaugural operation involved supplying 2,500 metric tons of International Maritime Organization (IMO)-compliant Very Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (VLSFO), refined by Cnergyico PK Limited, to the UAE-owned LNG vessel ENUGU at Gwadar Port. The successful use of locally refined marine fuel demonstrates Pakistan’s ability to meet stringent international environmental and quality standards and reflects the country’s expanding capacity to support global shipping with high-quality fuel produced at home.

Industry observers believe that this achievement represents far more than a single commercial transaction. It establishes the foundation for a modern bunkering ecosystem in Pakistan, enabling the country to offer reliable refuelling services to international cargo ships, LNG carriers, container vessels, and oil tankers passing through one of the world’s busiest maritime corridors.

Gwadar Port occupies a strategically important location near the entrance of the Arabian Sea and close to major international shipping lanes connecting the Middle East, South Asia, East Africa and beyond. With global maritime trade continuing to expand, the availability of internationally compliant bunkering facilities at Gwadar has the potential to attract a growing number of vessels seeking efficient, secure and cost-effective refuelling services during their voyages.

Experts note that successful bunkering operations generate substantial economic benefits that extend beyond fuel sales. Every vessel calling at a port for refuelling also creates opportunities for additional port services, pilotage, tug operations, maintenance support, fresh water supply, waste management, ship chandelling and crew-related services. These activities contribute to increased port revenues while creating employment opportunities for skilled professionals across the maritime sector.

The collaboration between NLC and Vitol is also being viewed as an important example of successful cooperation between Pakistani institutions and leading international companies. By combining local operational capabilities with global expertise in energy trading and marine fuel supply, the partnership has demonstrated that Pakistan can meet the operational requirements and service standards expected by international shipping companies.

The availability of locally produced IMO-compliant VLSFO further strengthens Pakistan’s energy and maritime sectors by reducing dependence on imported marine fuel while supporting domestic refining capacity. It also reflects the country’s commitment to cleaner marine fuels in line with international environmental regulations aimed at reducing sulphur emissions from ships operating worldwide.

Maritime analysts believe the timing of this development is particularly significant. As global shipping companies continue to diversify their logistics and refuelling options amid changing regional trade dynamics, ports capable of providing secure, efficient and internationally certified bunkering services are becoming increasingly important. Gwadar’s strategic location, combined with expanding port infrastructure and reliable fuel supply capabilities, positions it as an attractive alternative for international vessels navigating the region.

The successful completion of the inaugural bunkering operation also reinforces ongoing efforts to develop Gwadar into a fully integrated maritime, logistics and commercial hub. Continued investment in port infrastructure, storage facilities, marine services and supporting logistics is expected to further enhance the port’s competitiveness and strengthen Pakistan’s role in regional and international trade.

Officials and industry stakeholders have welcomed the achievement as a positive signal for investors and global shipping operators, expressing confidence that additional bunkering operations will follow in the coming months. As maritime activity at Gwadar continues to expand, the port is expected to play an increasingly important role in facilitating international commerce, supporting Pakistan’s export and import sectors, and generating long-term economic opportunities.

The successful refuelling of an international LNG vessel at Gwadar Port therefore marks not only a technical accomplishment but also an important milestone in Pakistan’s journey towards becoming a competitive maritime nation. With internationally compliant fuel, strategic partnerships and a favourable geographic location, Gwadar is steadily strengthening its credentials as an emerging regional bunkering destination and an important gateway for global maritime trade.
