Canada Announces Retaliatory Tariffs on More Than 700 US Products

Canada has announced retaliatory tariffs on more than 700 US products in response to new trade measures imposed by the Trump administration. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne and Industry Minister Mélanie Joly described the move as a “focused response” to what Ottawa considers unfair US trade practices, with tariffs covering C$27.6 billion worth of American imports set to take effect on September 8.

The new duties, mostly set at 25% or 50%, will apply exclusively to goods originating in the United States. Targeted products include steel, dairy goods, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, cosmetics, wood products and outdoor equipment, while a smaller group of items, including air-conditioning units and tool parts, will face a 15% tariff.

The measures follow the breakdown of trade talks between Ottawa and Washington and come after Prime Minister Mark Carney pledged a “dollar-for-dollar” response to US tariffs. Joly urged Canadian businesses and consumers to prioritize domestic products as part of a broader “resistance” effort, while the government announced more than C$7 billion in additional support for affected businesses, bringing total tariff-related assistance announced over the past 18 months to more than C$20 billion.
