Barbie 2 in Trouble? Warner Bros May Shelve Margot Robbie Sequel
Margot Robbie’s Barbie sequel could be facing a major setback, with reports suggesting that Warner Bros. may shelve the project if an agreement is not reached soon.
The 2023 comedy fantasy film, directed by Greta Gerwig , became a massive box-office accomplishment and immediately headed to solid demand for a sequel. Reports recently confirmed that Barbie 2 is in the works, with Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Michael Cera and Simu Liu set to reprise their roles.
According to The New York Times, the future of the highly expected sequel remains unclear. Warner Bros. has reportedly made six offers to the filmmakers and stars, but all of them have been rejected.
A source close to the studio said the latest offer, made this spring, was the biggest deal Warner Bros. had ever offered a filmmaking team and its stars, describing it as “life-changing money.”
Reports suggest Robbie, Gerwig and Gosling are seeking higher upfront payments and bigger shares of the film’s profits. Gosling has reportedly asked for $20 million to return as Ken.
Warner Bros. reportedly has only four months to move the project into active development. Otherwise, the sequel could return to Mattel, potentially ending Gerwig’s involvement as director.
