Gunfire erupts at Philadelphia Eid event; 3 hurt

Eid celebrations turned sour in US state Pennsylvania after several people were injured as a result of firing at the Clara Muhammad Square Park in Philadelphia.

Around 1,000 Muslims were gathered to celebrate the Eid-ul-Fitr, marking the end of holy month of Ramazan around the world, when the unfortunate incident took place after two groups opened fire at each other at the site. As a result, three people were injured in the firing, which saw around 30 rounds being fired.

Philadelphia Police Commissioner Kevin Bethel said a 15-year-old gunman was also among the wounded. The teen armed with an assault rifle was engaged by a police officer.

He further said that the teenage gunman is under treatment at a hospital and his condition is out of danger. However, the Philadelphia commissioner stressed that the police do not believe the shooting to be connected to the Eidul Fitr celebrations.

He added that 99 per cent of the individuals attending the event were good people. We have young people engaging in gunfire who just really destroyed the event’s sanctity, Bethel said.

The police, meanwhile, have taken five people into custody and also confiscated weapons from the incident site.
