Public transport fares reduced in Punjab after petrol price drop
The start of 2026 has brought good news for commuters in Punjab, as public transport fares have been reduced following the federal government’s announcement of a fall in petrol prices.
The Punjab Transport Department has lowered fares for inter-district bus routes. Depending on the route, fares have been reduced by Rs60 to Rs180.
For travelers from Lahore to major cities, the fare to Islamabad has dropped from Rs1,910 to Rs1,850. Those heading to Murree now pay Rs2,290 instead of Rs2,370, while fares to Peshawar have fallen from Rs2,610 to Rs2,530. Fares to Mansehra are now Rs2,420 (down from Rs2,500), and to Abbottabad Rs2,240 (down from Rs2,310).
For central and southern routes, fares to Faisalabad are now Rs980, Sadiqabad Rs2,430, and Multan Rs1,650. Long-distance travelers will also benefit, with fares from Lahore to Karachi reduced from Rs5,800 to Rs5,620, and to Sukkur from Rs3,510 to Rs3,400.
Officials say these fare reductions are meant to pass the benefits of cheaper fuel directly to the public. Commuters are expected to save immediately as the revised fares are now in effect across the province.
The federal government reduced petrol prices by Rs10.28 per litre from January 1, 2026, while High-Speed Diesel (HSD) prices were cut by Rs8.57 per litre. Petrol now costs Rs253.17 per litre, down from Rs263.45, and HSD is Rs257.08 per litre, down from Rs265.65.
The Ministry of Energy’s Petroleum Division said the adjustment was made after reviewing international oil prices and domestic conditions, providing relief for consumers at the start of the New Year.
