Sourav Ganguly Criticizes BCCI Selectors Over Mohammad Shami Snub

11 November, 2025 11:23

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has openly criticized the BCCI selectors for leaving out veteran pacer Mohammad Shami from the squad for the upcoming two-Test series against South Africa. Ganguly urged Shami’s immediate return to the national team across all formats.

Shami, who last played for India in the Champions Trophy in March 2025, has been in excellent form in the Ranji Trophy for Bengal, but was still overlooked by the selectors. The 35-year-old fast bowler has been out of the national setup following ankle surgery, after being India’s leading wicket-taker in the 2023 ODI World Cup.

As President of the Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB), Ganguly praised Shami’s recent performances, directly contradicting the selectors’ decision to focus on younger bowlers like Prasidh Krishna and Akash Deep.

Speaking to the media, Ganguly said: “Shami is bowling exceptionally well. He is fit and we saw in the three Ranji Trophy matches where he’s won Bengal on his own.”

He added: “I’m sure the selectors are watching and there is communication between Mohammad Shami and the selectors. But if you ask me, in terms of fitness and skill, it’s the Mohammad Shami we know of.”

Shami has already taken 15 wickets in three Ranji Trophy matches this season, bowling 91 overs, showing his endurance and rhythm.

Ganguly’s strong support comes amid growing discussions about Shami’s place in the Indian cricket team. The pacer has previously expressed disappointment over being left out despite feeling fully fit and match-ready. Many fans and cricket experts have also backed Shami’s return, citing his experience and consistent domestic performance.
