PMD Issues Nationwide Monsoon Alert for July 1–6, 2026: Heavy Rainfall, Flash Floods and Landslides Forecast Across Pakistan

01 July, 2026 09:23

The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) announced that a fresh monsoon spell is set to sweep across the country beginning in the first week of July, bringing widespread rainfall, thunderstorms, and potential flooding to multiple provinces.

Monsoon rains, which typically affect Pakistan between June and September, are vital for replenishing water reserves and providing relief from intense summer heat. However, they also carry significant risk of deadly floods, landslides, and displacement — particularly in low-lying, densely populated, or poorly drained areas.

In its official weather advisory, the PMD noted that a westerly wave was expected to enter the upper parts of the country from June 30. Simultaneously, “moist currents from the Arabian Sea are continuously penetrating the eastern and central parts of the country.” Bay of Bengal moisture currents were additionally expected to reach the upper regions from July 2.

Region-wise Forecast (July 1–6):

Azad Kashmir — including Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Mirpur, and surrounding areas — is expected to receive scattered rain and isolated heavy falls from July 1 to July 6. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa districts, spanning from Dir and Chitral to Peshawar, Mansehra, and Waziristan, are forecast to see rain from July 1 to July 5. Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore, Faisalabad, Sialkot, and major Punjab cities are also in line for rainfall between July 1 and July 6. Southern Punjab districts like Multan, Bahawalpur, and DG Khan will experience rain from July 3 to July 5. Gilgit-Baltistan areas including Hunza, Skardu, Gilgit, and Ghanche are forecast for rain from July 1 to July 5. Balochistan’s northern belt — covering Zhob, Kohlu, Sibbi, and Dera Bugti — faces rain from July 1 to July 4. Sindh districts including Sukkur, Larkana, and Jacobabad are expected to receive rainfall on July 3 and July 4.

The PMD cautioned that the system poses risks of infrastructure damage — including to “solar panels, electric poles and billboards.” Landslide alerts were issued for upper KP, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir from July 1 to July 6. Flash flooding warnings were extended to streams in Kashmir, KP, GB, and hill torrents of DG Khan from July 2 to July 5. Urban flooding is particularly feared in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Lahore, Gujranwala, Sialkot, Narowal, and Faisalabad from July 1 to July 4.

PDMA Punjab on High Alert

In parallel, the Punjab Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) activated a province-wide pre-monsoon alert under the directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz. PDMA Director General Umar Javed said all commissioners and deputy commissioners have been instructed to ensure advance emergency arrangements. Citizens were advised to avoid open spaces during lightning and thunder, and refrain from unnecessary travel during dust storms and strong winds. Farmers were urged to take preventive steps to protect their crops, while tourists heading to northern areas were cautioned to monitor weather updates closely. In the event of an emergency, the public was directed to contact PDMA’s helpline at “1129.”
