Ashleigh Banfield Labels Nancy Guthrie Case a ‘Mess’ as Investigation Expands to Local Workers

04 April, 2026 10:10

The disappearance of Nancy Guthrie continues to puzzle authorities as the case enters its third month without significant progress. Legal crime journalist Ashleigh Banfield has described the investigation as a “mess” following reports of new developments involving local workers around Guthrie’s Tucson home.

Banfield revealed on her podcast that investigators have now begun questioning contractors and subcontractors who may have been in or near Nancy Guthrie’s residence. “Can you imagine the number of people that you’d have to find and then just getting through all of those interviews… the quote was, ‘It’s a mess. It’s a mess,’” Banfield said.

According to Banfield’s sources, the list of individuals could include construction workers, electricians, delivery personnel, and maintenance staff—making the investigation time-consuming and prone to dead ends or false leads. She also highlighted that the crime may have been planned by someone familiar with Guthrie’s home, noting signs of forced entry and the unusual opening of her back gate and screen door.

Meanwhile, Savannah Guthrie is set to return to the Today show on April 6, 2026, after nearly two months away due to her mother’s disappearance. Savannah has expressed uncertainty over the investigation and no new updates regarding her mother’s whereabouts.

Nancy Guthrie, 84, was last seen on January 31, 2026, at her Tucson home. Authorities suspect possible abduction after camera footage showed a masked man outside her residence. The combined reward for information has now reached USD 1.1 million, but no suspect has been identified.
