Enshrine the Torch from Shireen Abu Akleh

Shireen’s voice was the first thing in the morning I always heard, said one of the attendant at Candle Light Vigil Gathering in remembrance of Shireen Abu Akleh, She was martyred at the headquarters of the UN’s ESCWA in Beirut, Lebanon, on May 12, 2022.

Shireen’s killing raise a question not only on human rights violation but Press Freedom and Safety overall. Israeli forces in recent years have deliberately killed numerous Journalist and put into prison as well in severe survival conditions.

Shireen covered the Palestinian Genocide for decades and was very open in sharing the ground realities without any bias. She was threaten by the Israeli forces many times. But her courage to show the realities and truth will always be remembered said the students at the vigil.

During the event many student shared stories of becoming a journalist like Shireen to share truth specially from Palestine and Lebanon. The students also added “Israel has killed more than 2800 journalist, Shireen’s killing was a message about what is coming next”

At the end of the gathering all the students made prayers for all the departed journalist, the event was largely appreciated by the International Media.
