Iran says US talks focus on ending war, not Hormuz management or nuclear issue
TEHRAN: Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei has said that Iran and the United States have reached a framework for discussions, but a final agreement between the two sides is still not close.
Speaking at a press conference, Baghaei said Iran is holding talks to help end the ongoing conflict, but clarified that Tehran is currently not negotiating on the nuclear issue.
He stated that although progress has been made on a framework, no one can say that a complete agreement between Iran and the US is near at this stage. He also said there is currently no plan to send a delegation to Pakistan.
According to the spokesperson, if the memorandum of understanding (MoU) is finalized, further negotiations on the nuclear issue, details of the agreement, and other matters will continue within the next 60 days.
Baghaei said the proposed 14-point MoU mainly focuses on ending the war and lifting the US naval blockade. In return, Iran would take steps to ensure safe movement through the Strait of Hormuz.
He added that Iran will not impose tolls in the Strait of Hormuz, but charging service fees for facilities and services is normal and should not be described as a toll tax.
The Iranian spokesperson further said that ending conflicts on all fronts, including Lebanon, would also be part of any possible agreement.
He also claimed that the recent diplomatic progress is the result of weeks of talks and contacts held through Pakistan’s mediation efforts.
