Powerful 7.3-Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Southern Mexico, Tsunami Warning Issued

A powerful 7.3-magnitude earthquake struck southern Mexico on Friday, shaking parts of neighboring Guatemala and El Salvador and prompting a tsunami warning for sections of the Pacific coast. According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the earthquake’s epicenter was located about 48 kilometers southwest of Aquiles Serdan in the Mexican state of Chiapas.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said hazardous tsunami waves were possible within 300 kilometers of the epicenter, warning that waves of up to one meter above normal tide levels could affect parts of the Mexican and Guatemalan coastlines. Authorities urged residents to remain alert as officials monitored coastal conditions following the quake.

Mexican Secretary of the Navy Raymundo Pedro Morales Angeles said initial assessments showed no serious damage from the earthquake. He advised the public to avoid beaches temporarily due to the possibility of elevated sea levels. Oaxaca Governor Salomon Jara Cruz also said the quake was felt with moderate intensity in the state capital, adding that no significant damage had been reported in the region.
