US Troop Death Toll Rises to 16 Amid Escalating Iran Conflict

19 July, 2026 09:34

On Saturday the US military confirmed the deaths of two more American service members in the war with Iran, increasing the total number of US military deaths to 16.

The most recent losses highlight the increasing possibilities confronted by American forces across the Middle East. Even without large numbers of troops on the ground, US personnel remain vulnerable to missile, drone and air attacks as tensions continue to rise. Following the failure of peace talks, US military bases across the region have increasingly become targets of Iranian attacks.

President Donald Trump has defended the military campaign, saying it is necessary to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. However, as of Saturday afternoon, he had not publicly commented on the latest deaths in Jordan. Instead, the White House referred to a statement issued by US Central Command (CENTCOM).

The first American fatalities occurred shortly after the conflict began on February 28, when an Iranian drone strike hit a civilian port in Kuwait, killing six US soldiers from a supply and logistics unit. Another soldier later died from injuries sustained during an Iranian attack on Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia.

In March, six more service members were killed when a KC-135 refueling aircraft supporting US operations crashed in Iraq. Earlier this month, a US Navy pilot also lost his life after a helicopter crashed in the Arabian Sea, although the Navy said there was no evidence the incident was caused by enemy action.

On Saturday, CENTCOM confirmed that two US service members were killed while defending against Iranian ballistic missile and drone attacks in Jordan. Another service member remains missing. The military said it would not release the identities of the victims until their families had been notified.

The conflict has also caused heavy casualties beyond the US military. Iranian officials say at least 50 people have been killed and more than 500 injured in US strikes over the past three weeks. Civilians, foreign workers and people aboard commercial ships in the Gulf, as well as individuals in Israel and Lebanon, have also lost their lives.
