Iran Calls New US Sanctions ‘State and Economic Terrorism’

27 August, 2026 14:48

TEHRAN: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has described the latest US sanctions against Iran as an act of state and economic terrorism and has written to the UN Secretary-General, the Security Council and all UN member states.

According to Iranian media, Araghchi said the United States had failed to achieve its objectives through war or by involving other countries in its campaign and was now attempting to disrupt Iran’s legitimate economic relations with other nations.

In his letter, the Iranian foreign minister said the sanctions deliberately harm civilians by restricting access to food, medicines, medical equipment, energy and other essential goods.

He said such restrictions violate fundamental rights, including the rights to life, health, food and an adequate standard of living.

Iran called on the UN Security Council and member states to condemn and reject the unilateral coercive measures and secondary sanctions imposed by the United States.

Araghchi also urged UN member states not to recognise or implement the US sanctions against Iran.

The letter further called on Washington to immediately stop pressuring third countries to alter their legitimate economic relations with Iran.

Iran said it would continue to challenge what it described as unilateral US measures aimed at restricting its lawful economic engagement with other countries.
