100 people died from cholera and dengue fever in War-torn Sudan

Cholera and dengue epidemics in war-torn Sudan have killed more than 100 people since August, the Health Ministry said Saturday.
A total of 1,049 cholera cases, including 73 deaths, were recorded in Khartoum, Al-Jazeera state in the south and Gedaref state in the west, the ministry said.
Khartoum is one of the main battlegrounds in the fighting between rival generals that has ravaged the country since April.
Hundreds of thousands of residents of Greater Khartoum fled to quieter areas in Gedaref and Al-Jazeera, overloading drinking water supplies.
The ministry said nine Sudanese states have recorded cases of mosquito-borne dengue fever, with 49 deaths out of a total of 3,316 cases. Gedaref state, which borders Ethiopia, has reported 2,152 cases and 33 deaths.
Even before fighting broke out in April, Sudan’s health system was struggling to contain outbreaks that followed the country’s rainy season, which began in June.
Today with the bombing of hospitals, medicine shortages and the flight of many doctors from the country the health system is pushed to the brink.
A report from the Ministry of Health said 70% of hospitals in war-torn areas are no longer functioning.
