Election of Yusuf Raza Gilani as Senator jolts ruling PTI (Pakistan Tehreek e Insaf).

Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani of Pakistan People’s Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) won Senate seat from Islamabad.

Finance Minister Abdul Hafeez Sheikh lost the Senate election to him.

Opposition parties had jointly fielded former prime minister Gilani for Senate seat.

Finally, he won the general seat of Senate from Federal Capital. He secured 169 votes against the 164 votes gone to Abdul Hafeez Sheikh of PTI.

Meanwhile, Fozia Arshaf of the PTI also won the General and Woman seats. She secured 174 votes, while the loser Farzana Kausar of PMLN bagged 161 votes.

However, the authorities announced rejection of seven votes during the polling for the general seat of Senate from the Federal Capital.

During polling for their electoral fray, five votes stood rejected.

Meanwhile, electoral college members vote to elect 37 Senators today (Wednesday).

The polling which started at 9 am continued till 5 pm.

Polling on thirty-seven vacant seats of the Senate continued at the parliament house and three provincial Assemblies, including Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

In the federal capital, the National Assembly hall declared the polling station.

Moreover, contesting candidates and their agents also remained present.

Meanwhile, Special Secretary of Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) Zafar Iqbal Hussain served as a Returning Officer and oversaw the election process and later announced the results.
