Massive 8.8 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Near Russia’s Eastern Coast, Tsunami Alert Issued

30 July, 2025 10:38

An earthquake measuring 8.8 in magnitude struck near the Kamchatka region of Russia.

According to foreign media reports, a tsunami warning has been issued following the earthquake.

The report states that the epicenter of the earthquake was located about 136 kilometers east of the city of Petropavlovsk on the Kamchatka Peninsula, Russia, at a depth of 19 kilometers.

After the earthquake, 4-meter-high tsunami waves hit the Russian coastal area of Severokurilsk, causing damage to some buildings and injuring several people.

Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Hayashi warned residents to immediately move to safe or higher ground, as the second and third tsunami waves could be even more dangerous.

Experts have expressed concerns that if the current earthquake’s magnitude and wave strength reach the levels of the 1952 event, widespread damage could occur in places including Hawaii. The 1952 earthquake recorded tsunami waves as high as 30 feet in Hawaii.
