FBR Cracks Down on Wealthy Social Media Users Flaunting Luxury Lifestyles
Islamabad: The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has launched a major crackdown on wealthy individuals who showcase their lavish lifestyles on social media but fail to reflect that wealth in their tax returns.
FBR officials have collected data on around 100,000 individuals posting pictures and videos of luxury homes, expensive cars, designer clothes, and lavish weddings online. These people are now under investigation for possible tax evasion.
Authorities say that public displays of wealth—such as suits worth $20,000 worn at weddings—must align with income declared in tax filings. Any mismatch could result in legal action.
A special FBR team has monitored social media platforms to gather evidence. Nearly 80% of tax returns will now be audited to detect discrepancies between declared income and visible spending. Anyone found hiding income or assets will be asked to explain the source of their wealth.
The crackdown also targets big-budget weddings, where extravagant spending on jewellery, outfits, and decor is often shared online. FBR says these expenses must be reflected in updated tax records.
FBR has warned that individuals who fail to update their tax returns to reflect their actual lifestyle could face strict legal consequences. However, those who submit accurate and complete income details will not be penalized.
Officials are urging citizens to update their tax returns promptly to avoid complications.
