Iran Red Crescent Says 600 Schools Hit in US-Israel Attacks
Since late last month, the Israeli dictatorship and the United States have unprovokedly attacked the Islamic Republic, targeting about 600 educational institutions, according to Iran’s Red Crescent Society.
The statement was made on Sunday by Razieh Alishvandi, the body’s deputy for foreign affairs and humanitarian law, who cautioned that such attacks were war crimes and violated international humanitarian law.
She stated that schools, universities, and other educational and academic institutions were among the targets and that the attacks had put the lives of schoolchildren, university students, researchers, and professors in jeopardy and resulted in the martyrdom of many of them.
According to Alishvandi, the attacks occurred in spite of the explicit legal safeguards provided to educational institutions under international law. “Any disregard for that protection can be considered a war crime and is a violation of international law.”
She emphasized that the attacks also go against the basic laws regulating armed conflicts.
“These centers must be protected under the Geneva Conventions in accordance with international principles and rules, and the principles of proportionality, precaution, and distinction must be observed in this regard.”
According to the official, the Red Crescent Society has already sent over 23 letters to the International Criminal Court’s prosecutor detailing and reporting humanitarian law violations throughout the illegal aggression, including assaults on residential homes, media outlets, airports, passenger planes, and medical and educational facilities.
She also mentioned that the president of the International Committee of the Red Cross had received a separate letter informing him of the illegal nature of these attacks.
