Pakistan Makes Major Progress Toward Maritime Self-Reliance

07 September, 2026 11:26

Pakistan is making important progress toward self-reliance and better facilities in the maritime sector through the Prime Minister’s Task Force on Maritime Reforms.

The National Dredging and Marine Services (NDMS) is becoming an important step toward meeting the country’s port-related needs locally.

NDMS is a joint project involving the National Logistics Corporation (NLC), Karachi Port Trust, Port Qasim Authority and Gwadar Port Authority.

Through NDMS, Pakistan is moving toward self-reliance in port maintenance and dredging services for the first time at the national level.

The Single Point Mooring (SPM) project is also helping strengthen the country’s energy supply chain.

A freight corridor established with the support of DP World is improving cargo movement at Karachi Port.

Digital enforcement and a risk-based targeting system are increasing transparency in customs clearance and trade processes.

Digital reforms, including IBA customs licensing, are also showing positive results.

With modern port facilities, stronger local capabilities and digital reforms, Pakistan’s maritime sector is moving toward greater self-reliance and efficiency.
