AI can now clone your voice

30 March, 2024 13:06

The advancement in the artificial intelligence (AI) technology continues as it has mange to successfully clone human voices.

The groundbreaking development was shared by the ChatGPT creator Sam Altman, who unveiled the new Voice Engine technology, claiming that it can recreate an individual’s voice with just 15 seconds of recording.

Engine with early testers but will not widely release at this time due to dangers of a possible misuse.

“We recognize that generating speech that resembles people’s voices has serious risks, which are especially top of mind in an election year,” the San Francisco company said in a statement.

Law enforcement officials in New Hampshire are looking into robocalls that mimicked President Joe Biden and were placed to thousands of voters shortly before the presidential primary.

The AI-generated call, featured what sounded like Biden’s voice urging people not to cast ballots in January’s New Hampshire primary.

This was brainchild on an operative for Minnesota congressman Dean Phillips.

A number of startup companies already sell voice-cloning technology, some of which is accessible to the public or for select business customers such as entertainment studios.

OpenAI took a similar approach in announcing but not widely releasing its video-generator Sora. Though it is clear that the OpenAI is about to enter the digital voice assistant business, which would compete against the likes of other voice products such as Amazon’s Alexa.
