October 15, 2025 – Madagascar has entered a new political phase after Colonel Michael Randrianirina seized control of the country. The takeover happened after President Andry Rajoelina fled, following weeks of massive Gen Z youth protests demanding change.
Randrianirina, a senior military figure, has now suspended major state institutions and declared himself interim leader.
A Powerful Military Figure from CAPSAT
Colonel Randrianirina belongs to CAPSAT, Madagascar’s elite military unit. This same unit was responsible for bringing former president Andry Rajoelina to power during the 2009 coup.
Now, years later, Randrianirina has turned against Rajoelina and taken charge himself.
Suspension of Government Institutions
After assuming control, he suspended key institutions, including:
-
Senate
-
Electoral Commission
-
High Constitutional Court
He announced that it may take up to two years before new elections are held to return Madagascar to civilian rule.
From Critic to Revolutionary Leader
In November 2023, Randrianirina openly criticized Rajoelina’s leadership. He was arrested the same day for allegedly inciting an army mutiny and was sent to prison.
He was later released in February 2024 with a suspended sentence and returned to his post at CAPSAT.
Support for Gen Z Protesters
On October 11, as nationwide protests grew, he released a video urging soldiers to refuse orders to fire on protesters.
His message encouraged many CAPSAT soldiers to join the civilian demonstrations, turning the movement into a national force.
